We had quite an interesting conversation today during science class. Part silly, part serious! We were discussing pollution and the release of gases into the ozone, the conversation naturally turned to methane which is released by garbage and many other things and how that could lead to the depletion of the ozone. Methane is also a bi-product of our farts...are we polluting the earth asked one student? We had some very good scientific answers and ways to problem solve for pollution...could we freeze these gases and turn them into solids, hence not having them rise in the air and destroy the ozone? Some fantastic discussion about an important topic! Here is what I found!
Freezing Temperatures for these gases are: Methane -305 F Methanethiol -189 F Dimethyl Sulfide -145 F Hydrogen Sulfide -116 F Carbon Dioxide -109F As the solids warmup about this point they would turn to liquid (except Carbon Dioxide which goes straight to gaseous form, and is odorless in small concentrations) In liquid form you probably would not smell very much until you reach the boiling points where the liquids start turning back to gas. The boiling points are: Methane -256 F Methanethiol 43 F Dimethyl Sulfide 95 F Hydrogen Sulfide -76 F Note that some of these could be liquid at relative high temperatures.
