Below is a map of the MN Zoo if you'd like to get a head start planning your groups route. The weather is shaping up to be very nice, fingers crossed there is no precipitation! What I have found works the best is to conquer the indoor stuff first (tropics trail, aquarium and the Minn. trail). Those are the biggest bang for your buck items. If your group is able to make their way through all those items in a timely fashion they will definitely have time to hit the larger outdoor exhibits (Russian Coast and Northern Trail). Once again, we do the Russian exhibit first because it is closest to the buses and if time is short you can always run back quick!
I will send home an itinerary the night before the zoo and let you know of any special events (bird shows, feedings..etc) that you can try and schedule if your group chooses! MN Zoo Official website & Calendar click here

What a perfect day to visit the SCSU Planetarium. The weather held up for us to have our picnic outdoors and it looks like it should be clear enough to view today's partial solar eclipse. At about 4:23, the eclipse should be at its peak. In MN the eclipse will only cover about 50% of the sun but you will still see a pretty neat show! REMEMBER, don't look directly at the sun, here are some tips for viewing the eclipse today: "A pinhole projector is the safest way to view the partial solar eclipse. Poke a hole into a piece of cardboard, or card stock, and hold it up to the sun. The partial solar eclipse will be projected onto a piece of paper or a screen. Exploratorium has several projection options for those looking to maximize their viewing experience.
NASA also suggests using your hands, interlacing your fingers and looking at the image that's projected on the ground. The same method works with tree leaves. Filters, or a telescope equipped with a solar filter, are another option but must be approved for solar observation; the space agency suggests a No. 14 welder's glass or aluminized mylar. NASA does not recommend using film, color or x-ray film, smoked glass or polarized filters." Our Zoo trip is finally here! Mother nature doesn't look like she is willing to cooperate with us very well but the good news is our zoo class and a large number of animals are indoors! Because the weather is going to be cold, please make sure your child has dressed accordingly if their group does go outside to see some of the larger animals (moose, tiger, bear...etc). I also remind students that whatever they bring into the zoo they need to carry with them the entire time, not their chaperone! If they would like to pack a little extra lunch, camera, sweatshirt...etc, a drawstring bag has really been a winner in the years past! Please remember to pick your child up at 5:00-5:15. We do our best to get back at 5:00 but are really at the mercy of Twin Cities traffic and even the weather this year. Please refer to your reminder letter sent home today or view it here.
